Road Trips Running

Savannah, Georgia and Lexington & Clemson, South Carolina

Whirlwind weekend road trips are so much fun! Especially when running and college football are the reasons for traveling.

During football season, I always try to attend at least 1 FSU away game. It had been a while since I visited Clemson, so I added that to the list. Last year, I attended the FSU/NC State game in Raleigh and there happened to be a 1/2 marathon on campus that weekend as well. That’s what started my football/running tradition! I decided that I would combine a 1/2 and FSU game each year!

After researching races, I found a race in Lexington, SC which was a couple hours from Clemson on the weekend FSU was playing. Win! So, I recruited my friend, JH and we planned the trip! From Florida, we drove to Savannah, Ga for a quick lunch at Vic’s on the River. Vic’s never disappoints. The crab beignets are a must and the shrimp and grits never disappoints. I’ve been to Savannah many times and it never gets old. There’s nostalgia on every street corner.

“Clemson is a beautiful town. The colors in the fall are gorgeous. The campus is a perfect picture of southern class, the fans are super friendly and their tailgating skills are second to none.”

From Savannah, we drove to Lexington, SC. Lexington is a small town near Columbia. I really enjoy running races in cities I’ve never been. It was very cold 36 degrees at the start line for this Florida Girl! Not many runners, so the route wasn’t crowded with people. The fall colors were gorgeous. It wasn’t very hilly, which was also a plus. Even for a small race, the finisher medal was very nice. After some post race celebrating, we headed west to Clemson for the FSU/Clemson game. Clemson is a beautiful town. The colors in the fall are gorgeous. The campus is a perfect picture of southern class, the fans are super friendly and their tailgating skills are second to none. FSU (as expected) took a loss, but Death Valley is a must visit for any college football fan. Coach Dabo and friends do it right!

Another whirlwind weekend road trip in the books. Always great to visit the southern states in the fall and luckily, us Floridians are only an 8-10 hour drive!
